Google Camera 8.1 disables ultra wide-angle astrophotography on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G

When the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G launched, they supported astrophotography with the ultra wide lens. Following a Google Camera update, however, that feature is no longer supported.

According to 9to5Google, the Google Camera 8.1 update that rolled out in mid-November removed the ability to use the ultra wide lens for astrophotography. Before, when switching to the astrophotography feature, users could switch between .6x, 1x, and 2x. Since the update, the .6x option is no longer available, and a Google support document says astrophotography only works on zoom settings equal to or greater than 1x.

Google Camera astrophotography

It’s unclear why the option was removed, but it’s disappointing regardless of the reason. It’s possible the feature is no longer available because the quality isn’t up to Google’s standards, but that’s simply speculation; Google could easily clear things up by releasing an explanation.

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners can still use the ultra wide lens for Night Sight, but not for capturing the stars. Using an ultra wide lens for astrophotography makes a lot of sense because it allows users to capture more of the scene. But users will have to make do with the normal lens, which still offers a relatively wide field of view.

As 9to5Google notes, you can uninstall updates to Google Camera and revert to version 7.6, which allows Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G owners to use the ultra wide lens for astrophotography. That’s the version that actually launched with the Pixel 5.

With winter storms rolling out across the U.S., now may not be the greatest time for astrophotography. But it’s a little frustrating to see features being stripped away from Google flagships for seemingly no reason. Users on Reddit have certainly noticed.

Perhaps Google Camera will be updated in the near future and bring the feature back. For now, astrophotographers can use zoom settings equal to or greater than 1x.

In August this year, ASUS kicked off limited Android 11 beta signups for the ZenFone 6, bringing the latest flavor of Android to the year-old flagship. A few weeks after the initial beta signups, the company started rolling out the first Android 11 beta to users. Soon thereafter, the ZenFone 6 received another Android 11 beta that enabled VoLTE on T-Mobile in the US. Now, after testing the beta release over the last few months, the company is finally rolling out the first stable build of Android 11 to ZenFone 6 users in Taiwan.

According to a recent post on the ASUS ZenTalk forums, the first stable build of Android 11 (build number 18.0610.2011.107) is now rolling out to the ZenFone 6 in Taiwan. The update brings all the new features introduced in Android 11, along with a new ZenUI interface design, full-screen gesture support with third-party launchers, and other minor changes.

The post further reveals that the Android 11 update for the ZenFone 6 is rolling out in batches, and it will only reach a small number of users initially. Once ASUS confirms that there aren’t any major bugs in the update, it should roll out to more users. As of now, ASUS hasn’t shared any plans for a global rollout, but we expect the update to start rolling out to users in other regions in the coming weeks. Check the changelog section below for a complete list of changes included in the Android 11 update for the ZenFone 6.

Changelog (translated)

  • Upgrade the system to Android 11
  • Back up your data before upgrading, and if you want to go back from Android 11 to Android 10, you can do so using an official package, but all your data will be purged.
  • Some third-party software is not yet compatible with Android 11
  • Remove private listening, ZenUI Help with one-handed mode.
  • The power man function is integrated into the battery settings. Remove the Avast scan engine.

  • The Wi-Fi Auto Download and Install setting for system updates is turned on by default
  • Third-party desktop support uses full-screen gestures

Apart from many tasks that one can achieve from a notebook, the best smartphones have gone way beyond. You can click amazing pictures and videos, binge watch your favorite TV shows, or even pay money without ever reaching for your wallet. But even to this date, most people continue to rely on laptops to get their work done faster and more efficiently. The initial days of the Covid-19 lockdown saw a decline in smartphone sales due to obvious reasons. However, at the same time, there was a huge demand for laptops as organizations scrambled to switch to a work from home setup.

There is a wide variety of laptops out there for almost every type of user. From gorgeous displays to long-lasting battery life, getting the right notebook is honestly not that difficult. Of course, you just need to look in the right place. It is best to assess all the factors before you go ahead and put your money down. Apart from choosing the right specs, you need to be mindful of the size and form factor. Of course, in the end, it all comes down to your needs and requirements. To make things easy, we have listed some of the best laptops that you should consider if you are planning to buy one in 2020. These are the best and top of the line options in various segments.

Navigate this guide:

Best Overall Laptop: Dell XPS 13 9310

dell xps 13 9300

The XPS 13 has quintessentially been one of the most influential Windows laptops in the past few years. Known for offering a solid balance of style and performance, the all-new XPS 13 9310 model offers up to an 11th-gen Intel Core i7-1185G7 processor, 16GB 4267MHz of LRDDR4x memory, and 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. The sleek metal design complements the borderless display, which is also one of its highlight features. Speaking of which, Dell has been offering some of the best-looking displays on its XPS lineup. This one features a 13.4-inch 16:10 ratio screen, and you can opt for a 1200p or 2400p resolution. The port selection is limited to a couple of USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 4, a microSD card slot, and a headphone and mic combo jack. Dell claimed battery life of up to 14-hours on the full-HD+ model which sounds great for all-day workloads. It is also Intel Evo certified which means that it is specifically recommended by Intel to offer a premium experience to the end-user.

    Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 is a highly recommended premium notebook that offers a solid balance of style and performance. It is also one of the best ultrabooks out there.

Best Portable Gaming Laptop: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14

asus rog zephyrus g14

Probably one of the most eye-catching notebooks of 2020, the Zephyrus G14 from ASUS is quite a versatile machine. It offers a fairly sleek 14-inch design and is also loaded with powerful CPU and GPU options to fulfill your gaming needs. The solid build, battery life, and that unique dot-matrix display on the lid add up to what can be called the best everyday gaming laptop. Notably, ASUS is offering the machine with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 4000 processor options as well as a 120Hz display. The only gripe we have is that it does not come with a built-in webcam for your Zoom meetings.

    ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14
The ROG Zephyrus G14 is one of the most praised laptops of 2020. It offers one of the most unique designs and comes with powerful CPU options from AMD.

Best Laptop for Mac users: Apple MacBook Pro 16

apple macbook pro 16

The biggest and most powerful MacBook in years, the MacBook Pro 16 is an easy recommendation for power users. The notebook has been applauded for finally bringing back the scissor-style keyboard switches. It also comes with some of the best speaker systems on any laptop on the market. Of course, being a MacBook Pro, you can expect this machine to glide through your audio, video, or photo editing tasks without working up a sweat. Apple has also gone all-out when it comes to the hardware offering up to an 8-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM, further expandable, and up to a whopping 8TB of SSD storage.

    Apple MacBook Pro 16
The MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful notebook from Apple. It is great for power users, especially if you are a creative professional.

Best 17-inch Laptop: Dell XPS 17

dell xps 17 9700

Dell reintroduced a 17-inch XPS laptop earlier this year, almost 10-year after we saw the last model. Offering all of the best features that we have seen on the recent XPS lineup, the XPS 17 simply enlarges the package. It also offers up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU making it an apt device for creative professionals and casual gamers. Additionally, you can expect the premium XPS styling, including the super-slim bezels, which reduces the laptop’s overall footprint down to a 15-inch notebook. This notebook is also a serious competitor if you are looking for a Windows alternative to the MacBook Pro 16.

    Dell XPS 17
Bringing the best of the XPS lineup, the XPS 17 is the best 17-inch laptop that offers a footprint of 15-inch machine. It comes with an excellent display and a premium design that you cannot ignore.

Best Budget Gaming Laptop: ASUS TUF A15

asus tuf a15

AMD’s Ryzen 4000 series has given solid competition to Intel this year. Apart from mainstream laptops, the chipset also crept into the gaming segment. One such option, especially if you are looking for something on a budget, is the ASUS TUF A15 gaming notebook. Targeting entry-level gamers, the TUF A15 is a fairly affordable option if you are looking for something powerful for your everyday work and gaming needs. The notebook isn’t the most premium-looking machine out there, but you get MIL-STD 810 certification and some RGB lighting for the keyboard. You also get the option for a 144Hz panel, although it isn’t the most color-accurate screen, which is expected from an entry-level gaming laptop.

    ASUS TUF A15
ASUS is offering a great entry-level gaming laptop loaded with AMD's power-packed Ryzen 4000 series processor and option of Nvidia GPUs.

Best Business Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon

The ThinkPad series is a no brainer if you are looking for a solid business notebook. The X1 Carbon primarily witnessed under-the-hood upgrades this year, but that doesn’t make it any less of a recommendation. The 10th-Gen Intel vPro CPUs deliver only a slight performance boost compared to the previous generation. But if your business notebook is 3-4 years old, then the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a wise choice. The laptop offers an ultraslim design that is highly durable and the best keyboard in its class, and good display options. We would also recommend looking at the HP Elite Dragonfly if you are willing to stretch your budget.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon
The ThinkPad is a popular name when it comes to business laptops. The 8th-gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon is pretty much the same as the last year's model, but brings new innards for improved performance.

Best Gaming Laptop: Razer Blade Pro 17

razer blade pro 17

Razer might still be an underdog, but the Razer Blade Pro 17 is undoubtedly the best gaming laptop out there. It has a fairly slim persona yet offers a healthy set of ports, including a full-size HDMI and Ethernet. There’s certainly some high-end hardware as well, including the options of a 300Hz display or a 4K 120Hz screen, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q, and an eight-core Intel Core i7-10875H processor with 16GB RAM. If you want to go all-out, you can look at the Alienware m15 R3 or even the Gigabyte Aero 17. Still, in our opinion, Razer is offering a wider option for gamers and creative professionals in a package that would appeal to a wider audience.

    Razer Blade 17 Pro
The Razer Blade 17 Pro is the ultimate gaming machine that combines a stealthy look and beastly performance. Razer is offering this notebook with up to a 300Hz display or a 4K 120Hz option which is quite something.

Best affordable laptop for Mac users: Apple MacBook Air (M1)

apple macbook air m1 xda

Apple announced the new MacBook Air last month which was a part of the first wave of products running on the company’s own custom chipset, the M1. Based on the 5nm node, the new M1 chipset is proving to be one of the biggest leaps for Apple in the computing world. It includes an 8-core CPU, a 16-core neural engine, and up to an 8-core GPU. Not only is the chipset offering better performance than the Intel processors, but it is also power efficient making the notebook last longer in terms of battery life. Now the overall design of the new MacBook Air is similar to the last-gen model, but anyone who is planning to get an affordable MacBook should not look any further. The notebook is available with 8GB of RAM and the option of either 256GB or 512GB SSD storage.

    Apple MacBook Air
The new MacBook Air with Apple's custom M1 chipset is a highly recommended notebook for someone looking to get into the Mac ecosystem and rock-solid performance for the price.

Best 2-in-1 Laptop: HP Spectre x360 13

hp spectre x360 13

If you are looking for the best 2-in-1 laptop that also looks impressive, then the HP Spectre x360 is a wise choice. Apart from offering strong performance, it features a vivid 13.3-inch 4K OLED touch display and an excellent keyboard. Compared to the previous-gen model, HP has trimmed down the areas around the display and keyboard, making it smaller in terms of the overall footprint. The notebook also offers fingerprint and face recognition for added security, while the improved trackpad offers a fluid experience.

    HP Spectre x360 13
One of the most premium 2-in-1 laptops, the HP Spectre x360 is for the ones who don't want to compromise on style and performance. It comes with a great 4K touchscreen display option along with Intel's latest 10th-gen CPUs.

Best Chromebook: Acer Chromebook Spin 713

acer chromebook spin 713

Chromebooks are usually the best option for school and college students since they are usually cheap. Not the Acer Spin 713 though. It is one of the most powerful, pricey, and best Chromebooks out there. Since it is expensive, it also comes with powerful 10th-gen Intel CPU options going all the way from Core i3 to a Core i7. It also comes with a 13.5-inch 2256×1504 touchscreen, a 128GB NVMe SSD, and 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, making it the fastest one out there. The Acer Spin 713 is also Project Athena certified, which means that it has a seal of approval from Intel when it comes to performance and battery life.

    Acer Chromebook Spin 713
The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is one of the most powerful Chromebooks you'll be able to pick up today. With beefy specs that rival that of budget gaming laptops, performance will never be an issue.

Considering the holiday season is here, we are assuming that you might be tempted to get your hands on one of these notebooks. Having said that, we suggest you hold on for a few more days. As in the case of the XPS 13, Intel’s new 11th-Gen mobile processors are slowly making their way to newer models. We are expecting more device manufacturers to start offering newer updated models at CES 2021 with the new processor options. Additionally, AMD is also expected to launch its new Ryzen 5000 series mobile CPUs for notebooks in January.

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

Here’s a demo of the Xiaomi Mi 11’s Night Video mode powered by BlinkAI

Xiaomi recently unveiled the world’s first phone to feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 chip — the Mi 11. The device comes with all the premium specs you’d expect from a next-gen flagship, including a 6.81-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up 256GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage, 55W fast wired charging support, 50W fast wireless charging support, and a great set of cameras.

On top of that, the device offers some really unique features, like an in-display fingerprint scanner that doubles up as a heart rate monitor, simultaneous audio sharing with two Bluetooth devices, and a Night Video mode powered by BlinkAI. While we’re yet to get our hands on the Xiaomi Mi 11 and check out all of its cool features in person, BlinkAI has now released a couple of demo videos showcasing the Mi 11’s new Night Video mode in action.

Xiaomi first teased the new Night Video mode on Weibo a few days ahead of the Mi 11 launch with a sample video clip that briefly showcased its capabilities. The latest clips from BlinkAI give us a better look at the results achieved by the Night Video mode, showcasing significantly brighter and more vibrant footage with the mode turned on.

If you’re curious about how the Mi 11 managed to achieve such results, here’s a brief explainer:

The Night Video mode on the Mi 11 uses BlinkAI’s deep learning software “alongside Qualcomm’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) on the Snapdragon 888 Mobile Platform to apply machine learning algorithms to very noisy, low-quality video frames taken during low light scenarios, to improve video in milliseconds. The company’s patented AI-powered imaging enhancement software platform is built on a neural network framework that mimics critical aspects of how the human visual system works. It is based on groundbreaking deep learning imaging research and aims to assist camera hardware in capturing images under challenging settings in the way we do as humans.”

The Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G launched with a new version of the Google Camera app (v8.0) that included a new UI and a couple of new features. The new UI and features then made their way to older Pixel devices last month with Google Camera 8.1. The update also included a new “Storage Saver” mode to help users take more photos and videos on their devices. Now, developers have released a modded version of Google Camera 8.1 that brings all of these features and changes to non-Pixel devices.

The latest Google Camera mod comes from XDA Senior Member Urnyx05, and it’s based on Google Camera 8.1.008. As a result, it gives you access to all of the new features and UI changes introduced with the official release, along with the new Storage Saver mode. Here’s the complete changelog for the latest GCam mod:

  • Added all the fixes necessary for the first start
  • Added Color Transform to fix saturation on devices with dull colors
  • Added an option to disable tracking focus
  • Added an option to disable motion photos
  • Added OPModes to fix EIS
  • Added buttons in the drop-down menu to enable/disable AWB
  • Disabled Sabre on unsupported sensors
  • Added an option to choose between Pixel 2, Pixel 3, IMX586 and IMX686 AWB
  • Improved colors on Mi Note 10
  • Added an option to disable Synthetic Fill Flash
  • Added an option to disable auto night sight on portrait and photo

As mentioned in the announcement post on our forums, the Google Camera 8.1 mod should work on most Pixel and non-Pixel devices. However, it may not work on some Samsung and OnePlus phones, along with a few Snapdragon 845-powered devices from other manufacturers.

1. NikGapps

XDA Senior Member Nikhil has stepped up and published an updated version of the NikGapps package. The SetupWizard module within this Gapps distribution is known to be problematic, but you can remedy this by skipping the module using nikgapps.config or flashing the variant without SetupWizard.

While there are still a few weeks left for the Galaxy S21 series launch, we’ve already learned almost everything there is to know about the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen plenty of leaks about the devices that have highlighted their design and specifications. We’ve also seen leaks that reveal crucial information about some of the new software changes that Samsung may announce at launch.

On top of that, we’ve managed to confirm that the top-of-the-line Galaxy S21 Ultra will feature S Pen support, and Samsung will offer special cases for the device with a dedicated slot to hold the S Pen. Although we’re yet to see what these special cases will look like, renowned leaker Ishan Agarwal has now managed to procure renders of some of the official cases for the Galaxy S21 series.

According to a recent report from MySmartPrice, Samsung will offer two types of flip cases for the Galaxy S21 series, along with clear standing cases, protective cases, silicone cases, and leather cases for all three devices. The company will also offer premium fabric-finish Kvadrat cases for the Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The flip cases, silicone cases, and leather cases will be available in a couple of colorways, while the protective cases and Kvadrat cases will only come in two color options.  Check out the renders attached above for a quick look at all of the cases that will be available for the Galaxy S21 series at launch.

It’s worth noting that while MySmartPrice doesn’t talk about S Pen support on any of the cases mentioned above, Ishan Agarwal’s tweet on the matter highlights that the Clear View case for the Galaxy S21 Ultra will have space to house the S Pen. Since it’s difficult to make out exactly how the Clear View case will accommodate the stylus from these renders, we hope to see clearer images of the case showcasing the S Pen slot soon.

These are the Best OnePlus Phones currently available!

The year 2020 has been one of the best years for growth over at OnePlus, despite the ongoing pandemic. Not only did they manage to release amazing flagship devices such as the OnePlus 8 Pro that are “premium” everywhere, but they’ve also dipped their toes into the mid-range and budget space with the OnePlus Nord lineup, from decent mid-range phones all the way down to cheap budget devices. OnePlus started off with “flagship killers” and eventually moved on to flagship phones, their lineup has gotten cohesive enough that we can now put together an actual list of some of the best OnePlus phones you can check out this year. From high-end phones all the way down to dirt-cheap devices, chances are that if you want to check out an OnePlus smartphone this holiday season with the full OxygenOS experience and all the goodies OnePlus brings you, you can do so regardless of your budget. If you are looking for other options, we have also collated lists of the best Android smartphones and the best Samsung Galaxy smartphones too.

All of the smartphones in our list come with basic headlining OnePlus features such as high refresh rate panels, as well as the same basic design. Read on to know more!

Navigate this list:

Best Overall: OnePlus 8 Pro

Oneplus 8 Pro in green, blue, and black set next to each other on a white background

The OnePlus 8 Pro is on a lot of people’s list for the best smartphone of the year. And for good reason. The OnePlus 7 Pro from last year, and the OnePlus 7T Pro that succeeded, showed people that OnePlus could actually make and sell a premium smartphone. OnePlus was a company that, up until that point, was known for releasing smartphones with flagship specifications, but that often lacked premium features compared to their more expensive peers. The OnePlus 7 Pro was OnePlus’ first real attempt at a smartphone that was truly premium. And the OnePlus 8 Pro refined that formula even further.

The phone features a Snapdragon 865, a 120Hz display, and up to 12 GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. It features a premium build, 5G connectivity, and a 4,510 mAh battery. It also features a very decent 48MP camera, with the impressive IMX689 sensor, and a very versatile quad-camera array. While it did away with the pop-up sensor from the OnePlus 7 Pro, the phone still manages to look very modern and premium.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the best OnePlus phone to date, and it’s also the most expensive. But if you’re looking for a premium experience, this is it.

    OnePlus 8 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro comes with the Snapdragon 865, an amazing quad rear camera, and all the premium features that you would expect from a high-end OnePlus device, such as a 120Hz panel. It's OnePlus most expensive yet, but also the best yet.

Runner-Up: OnePlus 8T

oneplus 8t lunar silver on silver background

While the OnePlus 8T doesn’t attempt to be as premium as the more expensive OnePlus 8 Pro, the result is a smartphone that comes at a respectable price point and still manages to inherit a lot of DNA from its premium older cousin, while also bringing back some fan favorites. For starters, the OnePlus 8T does away with the curved display while upping the refresh rate from 90Hz to the same 120Hz as the Pro, following a similar formula as its predecessor, the OnePlus 7T: a device that inherited a lot of features from the OnePlus 7 Pro while significantly reducing the price.

The OnePlus 8T also comes with the same Snapdragon 865 and is one of the first smartphones to come with Android 11 out of the box, based on OxygenOS 11. It features the same beefy battery, quicker fast charging and a similarly premium build while downgrading things like the camera very slightly. It’s one of the best Android devices out there, and one of the best OnePlus phones to date.

    OnePlus 8T
The OnePlus 8T brings most of the features that made the OnePlus 8 Pro so amazing, such as the 120Hz display, and brings all of that to a slightly lower price point. It's definitely worth a look if you're looking for a flagship that doesn't break the bank.

Best for the Average User: OnePlus 7T

OnePlus 7T camera

With the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 8T, most people have forgotten the OnePlus 7T even exists. While it’s a very old device and it’s far from the biggest thing in OnePlus’ lineup, it’s still worth a close look because it’s still very decent even by the standard set by other devices. The OnePlus 7T comes with a 90Hz panel, which is still very respectable in 2020. It also has the same premium design as other OnePlus smartphones, and a 48MP camera which, while not the same sensor as the OnePlus 8 Pro, is still usable and features similar versatility.

The OnePlus 7T was the middle step between last year’s OnePlus 7 lineup and this year’s OnePlus 8 lineup, and as a result, is powered by the slightly older Snapdragon 855+, which still provides a decent punch of performance even entering 2021 and with upcoming Snapdragon 888-powered phones around the corner. So if you’re eyeing that one but want something a tad cheaper, the OnePlus 7T might very well still be worth a look as one of the best OnePlus phones. And it’s currently available for $349, making it an absolute no-brainer.

    OnePlus 7T
The OnePlus 7T is already over a year old, but it feels as young as ever with a Snapdragon 855+ and a much, much lower price point, at just $349. It's worth a look if you just want a device that works, but don't care about things such as 5G connectivity.

Best Mid-Range: OnePlus Nord

oneplus nord

The OnePlus Nord is OnePlus’ first budget device since the launch of the OnePlus X several years ago. And for what it’s worth, it earned praise from reviewers and consumers alike. And for very good reason. The OnePlus Nord doesn’t attempt to emulate OnePlus’ flagship killer formula that catapulted them to where they are today years ago. Instead, it’s all about bringing the current OnePlus experience to a much lower price point. Which is definitely not a bad thing. The OnePlus Nord inherits features such as the 48MP camera and the high refresh rate display while cutting corners at other places. We have a Snapdragon 765G — it’s actually the first OnePlus phone to not feature a Snapdragon 800-series processor — with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage.

If you’re in the market for an OnePlus device that doesn’t break the bank, the OnePlus Nord is one of the best OnePlus phones out there.

    OnePlus Nord
The OnePlus Nord is OnePlus's first mid-range device, with a Snapdragon 765G and up to 12 GB of RAM. It brings the OnePlus experience to a slightly lower price range, which is exactly its magic and exactly why it's so amazing.

Best Budget (with 5G): OnePlus Nord N10 5G

OnePlus Nord N10 5G featured

The two lower-tier OnePlus are a hard recommendation for me in a lot of aspects since, while they are OnePlus smartphones, they don’t have a lot of the DNA that make OnePlus devices special. The Nord N10 5G removes things like the long-loved alert slider and replaces the AMOLED display for a more conservative LCD panel, things that an OnePlus device has never lacked since the very first OnePlus One was launched. But, if you’re on a budget, then these phones are worth a look. Mainly because the performance they provide is okay for the price. A Snapdragon 690 with 5G support runs things behind the scenes and manages to provide nice performance on a tighter budget.

If you’re looking for a device that does the job and doesn’t cost that much (and comes with 5G), the N10 5G still holds its ground as one of the best OnePlus phones out there.

    OnePlus Nord N10 5G
The OnePlus Nord N10 5G aims lower than the OnePlus Nord, but while it does away with a lot of ballmark features of OnePlus such as the alert slider, it should still be a very decent budget phone with 5G capabilities.

Best Budget: OnePlus Nord N100

oneplus-nord-n100-in-hand-feature

The N100 is, just like the N10 5G, an unapologetically budget device. It’s big, it doesn’t try to be premium, and the specs won’t blow you away, which is exactly where its magic is. If you’re looking for a smartphone on an even tighter budget, it’s worth checking out. It has a Snapdragon 460, up to 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and a very basic rear 13MP triple camera setup. Perhaps the best thing about it, though, is the battery: at 5,000 mAh, it’s the biggest that’s ever been packed into an OnePlus phone, and the 11nm Snapdragon 460 barely sips battery — which is helpful since the phone only has 18W charging, unlike other OnePlus phones.

Far from being one of the best OnePlus phones, this is the cheapest OnePlus smartphone to date, and it’s worth a look if you’re on a tight budget and you want a OnePlus device. If branding is not as important to you, there are other great options for cheap Android phones.

    OnePlus Nord N100
The OnePlus Nord N100 is unapologetically a budget smartphone. It doesn't have 5G, but with a Snapdragon 460 and a 5,000 mAh battery, it should be a pretty endurant budget smartphone that doesn't break the bank and still manages to perform alright.

Honorable Mention: OnePlus 8

The OnePlus 8 was a close contender for the “Best for the Average User” spot, but with the OnePlus 7T being much more cheaper, it was a pretty hard decision. The OnePlus 8 is still, for the most part, a very decent device, even after it’s been revised by the OnePlus 8T. The OnePlus 8 brings a 90Hz panel and the same Snapdragon 865 processor that powers other OnePlus devices in 2020. There’s also the same options of RAM and storage options. And, of course, we also have the same 48MP camera as the OnePlus 8T, and attractive color options such as Interstellar Glow.

Even though it didn’t earn a spot on our list, it still is a good device. Oh, and it also has full carrier support for 5G, in case you’re into that. Check it out!

    OnePlus 8
The OnePlus 8 is the slightly lower end sibling of the OnePlus 8 Pro, doing away with features like a 120Hz panel and bringing the same performance, including the same Snapdragon 865, to a lower price point.

This is pretty much it for our list. One of our shortest ones so far, but it encompasses OnePlus’ different offerings pretty well. The best OnePlus phone currently available in terms of features is the OnePlus 8 Pro, with sheer premium quality, with the OnePlus 8T reaching up a close second. The OnePlus 7T is probably the best for most people because it provides the best balance between performance and price. Lastly, we have the many mid-range OnePlus releases through the year as the best spots for mid-range and budget.

Vivo also claims improved low-light performance with the new night mode now seamlessly working across the primary, wide-angle, and telephoto sensors.

Save 25% on the TCL 10 Pro at Amazon and start the new year with a new phone

Looking for a new phone to ring in the new year with? Now is your chance to save on the TCL 10 Pro! Both the Ember Gray and Forest Mist Green models of the smartphone are 25% off, bringing them down to just $337. Normally at $450, the 10 Pro doesn’t feature on our best phones under $300 list, but this sales price gets it close!

In his TCL 10L and Pro 10 review, Max Weinbach stated that both were great mid-range Android phones on the market. However, the TCL Pro 10 was a bit harder to recommend, mostly due to its price point. It’s true that $450 is a hard ask for a midrange phone when prominent companies have their own, more powerful mid-range phones around the same price, but when you knock over $100 off the price, that’s a whole different story.

So, what do you get if you pick up this smartphone? The most notable feature is the quad rear cameras offering up to 64MP pictures. The TCL 10 Pro also offers a bunch of other features to make your pictures great. If you’re the type that loves to take smartphone pictures but doesn’t want to spend a lot on an upgrade, the 10 Pro is a perfect upgrade.

In addition, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 and 6GB RAM will provide you a relatively smooth experience. Couple that with the NXTVISION display, and this is a great mid-range phone for media viewing.

In short, if you need a mid-range upgrade, at the sale price, you can’t beat the TCL 10 Pro. Just make sure to clip the coupon on the store page to save 25%!

The other TCL phone reviewed above, the TCL 10L, is also on sale for 25% off. If you’re looking for a quality budget phone, this is definitely the pick for you! After taking 25% off the MSRP, the phone is only $188.

OxygenOS, the custom skin which powers OnePlus smartphones, is clearly one of the neatest and feature-rich strains of Android. Not only the UI is fast and fluid, but it also offers a wide scope for customizability. And on top of all that, OnePlus keeps updating it religiously with new features and optimizing earlier features. As part of the constant development, the company has rolled out a new OxygenOS update for the OnePlus 8T via stable channel, streamlining a host of elements in order to improve the user experience.

OnePlus 8T XDA Forums

LG Stylo 7 5G leaked renders show LG is sticking with the stylus and 3.5mm headphone jack

As we near the end of 2020, we’re starting to get a glimpse of what companies have planned for 2021. One of the devices seemingly on the horizon is the LG Stylo 7 5G which, as the name suggests, will feature stylus support.

The new intel comes courtesy of Steve Hemmerstoffer at Voice, who shared a few images of the Stylo 7 5G along with some details. There will reportedly be two versions of the Stylo 7, this one being the version that will support 5G; the other will top out at 4G/LTE.

The Stylo 7 5G will reportedly launch with a 6.8-inch flat display and a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. The previous model featured a water drop notch, so the design has been tweaked somewhat. The device’s overall size is said to measure in at 170.4 x 77.2 x 8.8mm (10mm with the rear camera bump).

LG Stylo 7 5G press render leak

Speaking of the camera bump, the Stylo 7 5G appears to include a triple camera setup that’s vertically aligned. Unfortunately, Hemmerstoffer didn’t provide any details about the camera specs. For what it’s worth, the LG Stylo 6 featured a 13MP wide lens, 5MP ultra wide lens, and a 5MP depth lens. We can probably expect something very similar.

Finally, the device reportedly features a fingerprint sensor that’s located on the right side; the previous model’s fingerprint sensor was on the back. The device also appears to feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can continue using wired headphones without issue.

The Stylo 7 5G’s main standout feature will be, of course, support for a stylus. The device features a slot on the bottom where users can store the accessory much like Samsung’s Galaxy Note series.

There’s no release date set for the Stylo 7 5G, but Hemmerstoffer speculates that it’ll be unveiled sometime in early 2021. We’ll let you know once we have official details, including price and release date.

Google Store adds new section to highlight its many subscriptions

On Google’s online store, you’ll find everything from smartphones to routers to smart home devices. Now, it’s also your one-stop shop to get information about the search giant’s many different subscriptions.

The navigation bar on the Google Store now features a Subscriptions landing page, which includes information about its many different services. There you’ll find information about YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Music Premium. You’ll also find info about Stadia Pro, Google One, and Google Fi.

“Take your Google products to the next level with premium content, cloud storage, security features, and more,” Google’s landing page reads.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Shows & Music: YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium,
  • Gaming: Stadia Pro, Google Play Pass
  • Storage & Security: Google One, Nest Aware
  • Phone Plan: Google Fi

The subscriptions landing page features a short blurb about each service, followed by a “Learn more” link. Following a link will bring you to a sign up page for that service. You can also take a deeper dive into what that service has to offer.

Google offers so many different free services, including Gmail, Google Docs, and Meet, that people often forget it offers more premium subscriptions. It makes sense for Google to advertise these services so prominently in its online store, where some of its devices and services go hand-in-hand.

One of the services you may want to get familiar with now is Google One, the search giant’s cloud storage service. That’s because Google recently announced plans to end unlimited free storage for Google Photos, which means some users will need to start paying for storage once their complementary 15 GB of storage runs out. A Google One plans starts at $1.99 per month (or $19.99 if you prepay annually) for 100 GB of storage.

If you received a Google device over the holidays and you’re looking to elevate your device “to the next level,” check out the company’s new subscriptions page.

Leaked Galaxy S21+ photos show off the flat display

We’ve seen the Galaxy S21 leak on a number of occasions, and it seems Samsung just can’t keep the device under wraps. Following a series of leaked renders, the device has again appeared in the wild, giving us a better look at the flat display.

The latest leak comes courtesy of MauriQHD on Twitter, who claims the images were obtained by a friend. The unidentified source seemingly shared three pictures of the Galaxy S21+, which provide a much closer look at the device’s flat display. The images also reveal just how thin the phone’s bezels are, while we get a good look at the hole punch where the front-facing camera sits.

A third image gives us a good look at the back of the Galaxy S21+, which includes the new housing for the triple camera setup. Based on the number of times we’ve seen Samsung’s upcoming device over the past few weeks, these new images aren’t all that exciting. We’ve already seen the handset from seemingly every angle.

What’s funny is the third image clearly shows a sticker on the Galaxy S21+ that warns not to take pictures of the device. Yet the person in possession of the handset doesn’t seem to mind sharing pictures for everyone to see. The same sticker also says not to leak information about the device, nor is it for sale.

According to previous leaks, the Galaxy S21+ will feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB of RAM, 4,800 mAh battery, and a triple camera setup. The latest leaked images appear to show off Samsung’s new Phantom Violet color, but there will also be variants in Phantom Gray, Phantom White, and Phantom Pink.

Samsung will reportedly unveil the Galaxy S21 series at an Unpacked event on January 14, but the company still hasn’t sent out invites. The same event may also include the Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy Chromebook 2, so there’s plenty to look forward to.

Pick up the OnePlus 7T at the incredible price of $350 at B&H Photo and Video

Earlier today, we showed you a great deal on the TCL 10 Pro, a great mid-range phone to upgrade to. But, what if you want options? What if you want to be able to choose between multiple mid-range phones that are on sale? Well, this is your lucky day, as the mid-range OnePlus 7T is also one sale, and its price is downright incredible at $300. In fact, when XDA reviewed the OnePlus 8 earlier in the year, Mario Tomás Serrafero stated that it wasn’t good enough to beat the 7T. That’s a significant ringing endorsement for the supposedly more “out-of-date” phone model.

So you may be wondering, what’s the catch here? The OnePlus 7T seems like a steal, so there needs to be a reason it’s so low. Well… there is a catch, but also, not really. This low price is at B&H Photo and Video, a retailer known for some great tech deals. Of course, they’re no Amazon, but I’ve ordered items from B&H in the past, and it’s always been a painless experience. If you haven’t ordered from them in the past, there’s no need to worry here!

The real catch is that while it’s an unlocked phone, this version of the OnePlus 7T only works with GSM networks. That means of the major carriers, this smartphone will work with AT&T and T-Mobile (but not Sprint). So if you have Verizon, this phone isn’t guaranteed to work with you!

You have two choices with this particular deal–the “T-Mobile Unlocked” 7T in Glacier Blue and the “Factory Unlocked” 7T in Frosted Silver. From what B&H is saying, they appear to be functionally the same and only connect to the same GSM networks. The Frosted Silver deal price is available until December 31, while the Glacier Blue deal doesn’t have an expiration but limited stock.

Get a OnePlus 7T for just $350! Available in Frosted Silver and Glacier Blue, pick your favorite color and grab an excellent mid-range phone at a budget price before it sells out!

Android’s Smart Selection feature can help convert between currencies and other units for you

$

Android’s Smart Selection feature has picked up a helpful new skill: unit conversion.

The feature was requested in Google’s IssueTracker over a year ago and was recently updated in the last few weeks. We noticed an update from mid-December that says the latest Smart Selection models now support currency and unit conversion on Android 9, 10, and 11 (via Android Police).

We haven’t had the opportunity to test the feature on every version of Android where it’s supported, but down below you’ll see a demo of currency conversion on an ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro running Android 11. To convert a currency or measurement, use Smart Selection to select text and there will be a new option that says “convert.” This will bring you to the Google app, where you can then convert it to your desired currency or unit.

Unfortunately, you can’t do the converting without first jumping into another app. It would be nice if once you select the text, you can do everything right there in an overlay. But it’s still a convenient way to convert currencies and units, taking some of the legwork out of the equation. You no longer have to copy the text, search Google, and convert. The process is a little quicker now.

The feature will come in handy as we buckle down across the U.S. for extended lockdown restrictions. For example, you may need to convert units in a recipe.

Android’s Smart Selection feature was first revealed back in 2017 with the release of Android 9 Pie and has been making our lives more convenient since then. The feature can intelligently highlight a phone number and pass it off to the Phone app. That’s just one example of what Smart Selection can do, and it’s about time a unit conversion feature was introduced.

Based on comments in the Issue Tracker, the new feature should work on devices running Android 9 and above, so you should be fine if you own an older device.

Google’s Adaptive Charging feature only works during certain hours

$

Google’s most recent Pixel Feature Drop included a number of new features, from contextual translation to improved home screen customization. It also included a new Adaptive Charging feature, which sounds like it could potentially be more restrictive than we first thought.

Available for the Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G, and Pixel 5, Adaptive Charging sounds straightforward enough:

Adaptive Charging helps preserve battery health over time by dynamically controlling how quickly a Pixel device charges. Just plug in your phone in the evening, set an alarm and the Adaptive Charging will work its magic.

The point is to charge your phone over a period of time rather than topping it off as fast as possible, as this can degrade your device’s battery more quickly. But the way the feature is setup could be a little restrictive for certain users.

Turns out, Adaptive Charging only works under certain parameters. According to a Google support document, via 9to5Google, you must have an active alarm set for 5 – 10 a.m. in order for the feature to work. You must also charge your phone after 9 p.m. Otherwise, Adaptive Charging won’t kick in and your device will charge normally.

That seems very specific, and may not align with everyone’s schedule, especially people who work the night shift. There may also be a lot of Pixel users who go to bed earlier than 9 p.m. and rise earlier than 5 a.m. For comparison, Apple has a similar feature called Optimized Battery Charging that is capable of predicting when an iOS device will be connected to a charger for an extended period of time.

To reduce battery again, iPhone learns from your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it.

Hopefully, Google can tweak its Adaptive Charging feature to be more dynamic in the future, rather than relying on current parameters.
